Auto Trader is where the majority of UK used car buyers start their search, and most dealers already have a settled routine for it: photograph the car, upload the images, publish the advert. This article is about one step in that routine — the editing step between the forecourt photo and the live listing — and where AI fits into it.
To be clear about what this is not: Motuva is not a marketplace, not a listings tool, and not a replacement for anything in your Auto Trader setup. Your adverts, your packages, your feed — all of that stays exactly where it is. Motuva does one job: it turns the photos you take on the forecourt into consistent studio-quality images. Those images then go into your Auto Trader adverts the same way your photos do today.
We have already covered how to shoot for Auto Trader and what Auto Trader's image rules allow. This article covers the step in between.
The problem the editing step solves
Auto Trader recommends at least 20 photos per advert, and your listing competes in a search grid against every comparable car in the area. The shooting side is solvable with a consistent process. What is harder to solve on a working forecourt is the background: cars get photographed where there is space, not where the backdrop is clean. Other stock, signage, and weather all end up in frame, and every advert looks slightly different from the last.
That inconsistency is what AI editing addresses. You photograph the car wherever it is parked, and the processing step puts every car in the same clean environment — so your whole stock profile on Auto Trader reads as one dealership rather than forty different car parks.
How the workflow runs
The workflow has three steps, and none of them change how you use Auto Trader:
- Photograph the car as you do now — phone photos are fine, shot on the forecourt. Frame the car properly and get light on it; the angles still matter.
- Process the photos in Motuva. Upload them through the web app, choose your studio setting, and Motuva returns studio-quality images as full-resolution JPEG or PNG files. Plates are handled on every image — clean neutral or your dealer branding — with no manual step.
- Download the files and upload them to your advert exactly as you upload photos today — through the Auto Trader portal, or through the stock system that feeds your adverts. To Auto Trader they are simply image files.
There is no integration to set up and nothing to install. If your stock reaches Auto Trader through a feed from a stock platform — for example, dealers running Click Dealer can see how Motuva sits alongside Click Dealer — the workflow is the same: the processed images go into the vehicle record, and the feed carries them out as normal.
For a closer look at how the processing side works day to day, see the web platform overview.
Staying inside Auto Trader's rules
Two things matter when you put AI-edited images on Auto Trader.
First, text on images. Auto Trader's advert image terms prohibit displaying text on listing images — phone numbers, price banners and similar. So no overlays on anything you upload to Auto Trader; branding belongs in the advert description. The full detail is in Auto Trader's image rules: what's allowed.
Second, accuracy. The car in the output is not a version of your car — it is your car, cut from your photograph and composited into the studio without being altered. What can still go wrong is the cut itself: a difficult shot separates imperfectly from its old background. So check each output against the original before publishing, the same way you would proof any advert. A clean background is presentation; the car the buyer views must be the car in the photos.
Why consistency moves the needle on the search grid
A buyer searching on Auto Trader sees a grid of thumbnails. Your first image is competing for the click against every other car in the same price band. Two things help it win: a properly framed front three-quarter shot, and a background that does not fight the car.
Across a whole stock profile, consistency compounds. When every advert from your dealership shares the same environment, a buyer scrolling through your stock gets the impression of an operation that takes care over details — and condition is exactly the thing a used car buyer is trying to judge from photos.
What it costs
Motuva's pricing is a flat monthly amount, not a credit system. The free plan covers 20 images a month at full output quality with no watermark, using the studio library. Pro: 150 images plus the ability to build your own studio. Ultra: unlimited images and API access. Most dealers process between three and eight images per vehicle, so Pro covers roughly 20–50 cars a month and Ultra covers a full forecourt's turnover. Full details are on the pricing page.
Trying it on your own stock
The sensible test is your own cars: take the photos from your last advert, run them through the free plan, and put the before and after side by side. Twenty images is two to five vehicles' worth — enough to judge whether the output earns a place in your Auto Trader workflow.
