
Lighting is the single biggest variable in whether a car photo looks professional or amateur.
You can have a clean car, the right angles, and a decent phone — and still produce a flat, washed-out, or shadow-heavy image that undersells the vehicle. Switch to good light and the same car, same phone, same forecourt looks like it belongs in a manufacturer brochure.
This guide covers the practical lighting decisions a dealer needs to make: when to shoot, what conditions to prioritise, and how to handle the days when the weather does not cooperate.
Why light matters more than equipment
A modern smartphone handles most shooting conditions competently. What it cannot do is fix bad light after the fact.
Hard midday sun creates sharp shadows under wheel arches, across bonnets, and along body panels that the phone's HDR processing cannot fully resolve. Low winter light at the wrong angle produces long shadows across the side of the car that obscure panel condition and bodywork detail. Interior fluorescent lighting turns everything orange or green regardless of what colour it actually is.
None of these problems come from the phone. They come from the light.
The practical takeaway: invest time in choosing when to shoot rather than in trying to fix problem shots afterwards.
The golden hour advantage
Golden hour — roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset — is the standard recommendation in photography for a reason. The sun is low, the light is diffuse, and the colour temperature is warm. For cars specifically:
- Panel reflections are long and gentle rather than sharp and blinding
- Shadow depth is reduced compared to midday
- Colours read more accurately — reds and oranges look rich; dark cars gain depth
- The warm colour temperature flatters most paint finishes
The limitation for most dealers is operational. Arriving early on winter mornings or staying late in summer to catch the golden hour is not always possible when there are customers to deal with. It is the ideal, not the only option.
Overcast days: the underrated working condition
Bright overcast — a solid cloud cover with even, diffuse daylight — is often better for dealer stock photography than clear skies.
The clouds act as a natural diffuser. Light comes from the whole sky rather than a single harsh point. Shadows are soft. Reflections in the paintwork are long and gradual rather than a white hotspot. The car is evenly lit across every panel.
For a dealer shooting a full forecourt of mixed stock, a consistent overcast morning can produce more uniform results across every car than a golden-hour session on varying vehicles. The quality ceiling is lower — you will not get the dramatic depth of a perfect sunset shot — but the consistency is high and the process is fast.
If you are choosing between a clear midday shoot and a bright overcast morning, take the overcast morning.
Midday sun: the common trap
Most dealers photograph cars when they have a moment — which is usually mid-morning to early afternoon when showroom activity permits. This is also the worst time of day for light.
The problems with hard midday sun on a car:
Roof reflections. The sun directly overhead creates a white glare patch across the roof. On darker cars, this reads as overexposure. On lighter colours, it bleaches the surface.
Deep shadow under the car. Hard top-down light throws the sills, lower door panels, and tyres into near-black shadow. Photos of dark-coloured cars in midday sun often look like they have no lower half.
Harsh panel highlights. Any curved panel — a door, a bonnet arch, the rear quarter — will carry a sharp specular highlight that competes with the actual shape of the car.
None of this is unfixable through post-processing, but it is significantly harder to work with than good natural light.
If midday is the only time available, position the car so the sun is roughly behind you rather than to the side. It reduces the cross-panel shadow problem, though it does not resolve the overhead reflection issue.
Handling reflections in bodywork
Reflections are unavoidable in car photography. Highly polished paint is a curved mirror. Everything nearby — buildings, trees, other cars, people — will appear in the bodywork to some degree.
The practical approach:
Distance reduces reflection complexity. Park the car away from buildings, forecourt equipment, and other vehicles where possible. The further the nearest reflective object, the less it dominates the bodywork shot.
Consistent background colours are neutral. A blue sky reflects as a pleasant gradient across a bonnet. A fluorescent-lit forecourt reflects as a patchwork of orange squares. Where you shoot determines what appears in the paint.
Cloudy skies are the cleanest reflections. An overcast sky reflects as a single even tone across the body, which is less distracting than any alternative and gives your editor — or AI background replacement — the cleanest possible input image.
Indoor and showroom photography
Indoor shooting solves the weather problem but creates a different set of lighting challenges.
Fluorescent tubes and mixed artificial lighting produce colour casts that phone cameras struggle to correct. Cars under showroom lighting often appear a different colour from what they are in natural light — and buyers who travel on the basis of photos notice the discrepancy.
If you are shooting indoors:
- Use as many lights as possible to minimise shadow directionality
- Position the car well away from walls to avoid their reflected colour appearing in the bodywork
- Frame the car level and straight-on, with the whole car in frame and a little space around it
- Accept that colour accuracy will be lower than outdoor shooting and compensate in the background replacement step
For prestige vehicles being shot specifically for their showroom presentation, professional studio lighting is the right answer. For routine dealer stock, outdoor shooting in good natural light is faster, cheaper, and more consistent.
What to do when you have no good lighting option
Dealers operate seven days a week regardless of the weather. Sometimes a car needs to go live today, and the light is poor.
The practical answer: shoot the car anyway in the best light available, and replace the background.
AI car photography works by identifying the car in your photo and generating a new studio scene around it. A flat grey morning still produces a usable input image.

- Overcast morning — best working condition for consistency
- Golden hour — best single results; less consistent across a full stock shoot
- Overcast afternoon — equivalent to morning; slightly flatter if the cloud is thicker
- Overcast midday — acceptable; AI background replacement removes the uninspiring sky
- Clear midday — workable with technique; watch the hard shadows
- Night / mixed artificial — most variable; highest chance of colour cast in output
