CarGurus photo galleries: a dealer review checklist

Review your US CarGurus gallery for useful angles, readable detail and reliable reporting before blaming a change in page views on the photos.

A gallery can look fine in a small inventory preview and reveal problems when a shopper opens the larger images. For a US dealership using CarGurus, review both experiences before treating the upload as finished.

What the CarGurus announcement actually says

In its March 2024 dealer announcement, CarGurus described larger galleries and zooming. It also explained a correction to the way vehicle detail page views were counted. Its recommendation for more than 20 quality images was advice in that announcement, rather than a universal upload limit.

The two changes answer different questions. A reporting correction affects the numbers you compare; a larger gallery affects what a shopper can inspect. Neither establishes that changing your photographs caused a change in leads.

Review the set at a useful size

Open a published vehicle and enlarge its photographs. Check whether the wheels, seat surfaces and dashboard controls remain readable. A small thumbnail can conceal motion blur or an overcompressed export.

Choose three different vehicles for this review: a dark car, a light car and one with a visibly worn interior. That gives the team different problems to inspect. Record the specific image that needs attention, rather than asking the photographer to make the whole set “better”.

Give each image a job

Arrange the gallery so a shopper can move from the overall vehicle to its equipment and condition. A second front angle should reveal something useful, such as the opposite wheel or body side. If it says nothing new, replace it with a missing interior or cargo view.

Keep photographs of wear understandable. A close-up should be accompanied by enough context to locate the mark on the vehicle. Buyers should not have to guess whether a scratch belongs to the bumper or a door.

Compare reporting carefully

When reviewing results, note the reporting period and any known platform changes. Keep the inventory mix and listing changes beside the figures. A week with fewer vehicles cannot be compared fairly with a larger stock week by looking only at total views.

Use the gallery review to identify visible defects. Use reporting to formulate a question for later investigation. Avoid assigning a sales percentage to a photo edit without evidence.

Prepare the exterior without losing detail

Motuva Studio can prepare exterior presentation images. Retain your original files and the interiors and condition close-ups you shoot yourself. Compare processed exteriors with their originals before uploading through your usual process.

Finally, reopen the CarGurus listing on a phone and a larger screen. Confirm the image order and inspect the enlarged versions. This is a file-based workflow; no direct CarGurus integration or marketplace approval is implied.
