March and September Plate-Change Photos: A Dealer's Plan

A practical guide to plate-change photography for UK dealers — planning the March and September surge and getting part-exchange stock live fast.

Twice a year, UK dealer operations face the same crunch: a surge in part-exchange stock arriving at the same time the team is at its most stretched.

March is the larger of the two plate changes. In March 2026, the UK registered 380,627 new cars — up 6.6% year-on-year and the strongest March since 2019 (SMMT). Every new registration drives a part-exchange, and many of those part-exchanges land on a forecourt within days of the transaction. The September change is smaller in volume but follows the same pattern.

The dealers who come out of plate-change month ahead are the ones who have a repeatable, fast photography and listing workflow. The ones who struggle are the ones treating each car as a fresh decision about how to photograph and process it.

This guide is about planning that workflow before the volume hits.


What actually happens to a dealer's stock at plate change

New registrations create part-exchange activity. Buyers arriving to collect a new plate car hand back whatever they were driving. That used car enters the forecourt stock.

March and September therefore produce two simultaneous pressures:

  1. A surge in incoming part-exchanges — more used cars arriving in a shorter period than in an average month
  2. Reduced team bandwidth — the same staff are managing new deliveries, handover paperwork, and customer-facing time on top of the normal workload

The cars that sit unlisted while the team is busy are cars not generating enquiries. Every day between a car arriving and going live with complete, professional images is a day of wasted listing opportunity.

The photography and listing workflow is often the bottleneck. It should not be.


The common mistakes in a plate-change rush

Photographing cars as they arrive, in whatever state they are in

A part-exchange car in March may arrive with the previous owner's belongings in the boot, a dirty interior, and unwashed paintwork. Photographing it immediately produces a listing that actively undercuts the car's perceived value. The right answer is a fast triage and prep process, not skipping prep altogether.

Processing photos one car at a time

Single-car workflows do not scale. If your current process is: photograph car, edit photos, upload to listing portal — repeated per car — you will fall behind in a high-volume month. Batch processing is the only viable answer at plate-change volume.

Using multiple different backgrounds or styles

When ten part-exchanges arrive in the same week and five different team members process the photos, the resulting gallery is a patchwork of different forecourt locations, different lighting, and different approaches. It looks unplanned.

Delaying listing because of photography backlog

The cost of a car sitting unphoto'd is real. It is not a car earning its keep. The more friction in the photography-to-live workflow, the more cars are invisible on the portals during the period when buyers are actively searching.


Planning the plate-change photo workflow

1. Decide on batch size before the rush hits

The question is not "how do we handle more cars" but "how do we handle all the cars in the same time we currently spend on fewer." Batch processing is the answer.

Set a batch target before March or September. A realistic example for a typical independent:

  • Photograph 10 cars in a morning session (once conditions, equipment, and location are fixed, 10 cars is achievable in 3–4 hours)
  • Process all 10 in one upload session rather than individually
  • List all 10 the same day

The planning decision is: what does our shot list look like, where are we shooting, and who is doing it? Decide those three things before the cars arrive, not after.

2. Designate a consistent shooting location

The biggest time-waster in an ad-hoc photography workflow is deciding where to put each car, every time. Pre-designate a shooting spot: a clean area of tarmac, ideally with a neutral background and access to natural light on two or three sides.

If your forecourt does not have a clean shooting spot, identify the best available option and always use it. Consistency in location reduces decision time to zero.

If you are using AI background replacement, the quality of the forecourt location matters less — the background will be replaced in processing. But a consistent location still reduces variability in the input image, which produces more consistent output.

3. Set up a prep triage system

When part-exchanges arrive in volume, triage by what the car needs before photography — photographing part-exchange stock covers the prep-and-shoot workflow for these cars specifically:

Immediate photo — car is clean, interior is clear, no obvious issues. Goes to the shoot queue same day.

Quick prep — needs a wash and interior clean. Goes through the 30-minute prep checklist and then to the shoot queue.

Hold for prep — needs mechanical or cosmetic work before listing. Photographed after prep is complete.

A simple whiteboard or a shared note with three columns is sufficient. The goal is to never have the question "is this car ready to shoot?" taking up decision time during the rush.

4. Brief your team on the shot list

In a plate-change month, you may have multiple people involved in photography. The shot list needs to be non-negotiable. A consistent 12-angle shot list means every car in the batch has the same coverage:

  • Front three-quarter
  • Rear three-quarter
  • Direct front
  • Direct rear
  • Driver's side profile
  • Passenger's side profile
  • Wheel close-up
  • Dashboard
  • Front seats from rear
  • Rear seats
  • Boot
  • Odometer

Print the list and keep it in the shooting area. A team member who has not photographed cars before can work through it systematically with no ambiguity.

5. Process in batches, not individually

The single biggest efficiency gain in plate-change photography is batch processing. Shooting 10 cars in a session and uploading all 10 at once is not ten times the work of uploading one — the fixed overhead (logging in, selecting settings, choosing background) happens once, not ten times.
