How to Photograph Alloy Wheels to Show Condition Honestly

Alloy wheel listing photos that show condition honestly save wasted viewings. How to shoot each wheel, handle kerb rash, and decide refurb vs disclose.

Photograph every wheel, straight-on, clean, in even light — and if there is kerbing, shoot it clearly rather than angling it away. That is the whole approach. The buyer is going to inspect the wheels within the first minute of the viewing anyway; the only question is whether the photos prepared them for what they find.

Why buyers check the wheels first

Kerbing is the most common cosmetic damage on used cars, the easiest for a buyer to spot, and one of the first things checked at a viewing. A buyer walking up to a car drops their eyes to the wheels almost automatically — partly because damage is likely to be there, and partly because wheel condition is a fast proxy for how the car was treated generally.

Wheels also generate enquiries. "What's the condition of the alloys?" is one of the most frequent pre-viewing questions dealers field, and every one of those calls exists because the listing photos did not answer it.

A clean, honest close-up of each wheel does two jobs at once: it removes a reason to phone before viewing, and it removes a reason to renegotiate at the viewing.


Honest close-ups beat hiding damage

The temptation with kerbed alloys is obvious: shoot from angles that minimise the damage, keep the wheel shots small or absent, and hope the buyer is committed by the time they see the car.

It does not work, and it costs more than honesty does.

The viewing always reveals the wheels. A buyer who travels an hour to find kerb rash they were not shown does one of three things: walks away, negotiates hard with the damage as leverage, or buys the car and remembers the experience. The first outcome is a wasted viewing — your time, the buyer's time, and a car taken off other appointments for nothing. The second hands the buyer a discount you could have priced in calmly. The third costs you a repeat customer.

A wasted viewing costs more than an honest photo. The buyer who saw the kerbing in the listing and came anyway has already accepted it. The condition question was settled before they left home, and the conversation at the viewing is about the car, not the wheels.

How to shoot alloy wheels

Clean the wheels first. Brake dust and road film hide the actual condition — in both directions. Grime can read as damage in a photo, and it can equally obscure real kerbing. A wheel cannot be photographed honestly while it is dirty. Five minutes with wheel cleaner per car is the non-negotiable step.

One shot per wheel, straight-on. Crouch level with the wheel centre and shoot square to the face of the wheel, filling most of the frame. Four wheels, four shots. Shooting only the driver's side and assuming the rest invites the question you were trying to close.

Roll the car if needed. If kerbing or a scuff sits at the bottom of the wheel's rotation where the tyre and ground shadow hide it, roll the car half a turn so the damage sits in the visible arc. The point of the shot is to show the condition, not to let the rotation hide it.

Angle for kerb rash visibility. Kerb rash lives on the outer rim lip and catches light edge-on. After the straight-on shot, if there is damage, take a second frame at a slight angle so the light rakes across the lip and the rash reads clearly. The buyer should be able to judge the severity from the photo — light scuffing and a buckled, gouged rim are very different conversations.

Even light, no harsh sun. Direct sun on a polished alloy creates hotspots that hide detail. Open shade or an overcast sky gives a clean, readable wheel shot. The broader principles — light, focus, and camera position — are the same ones in improving car photo quality.

Refurb or disclose: the decision

Kerbed alloys leave you two honest options: refurbish before photographing, or photograph and disclose. The wrong option is the third one — leave the damage and keep it out of the photos.

A way to think about it:

Refurbish when the damage is severe enough to anchor every viewing conversation, the car's price point supports the cost, or the wheels are a visual feature of the car (large diameters, diamond-cut finishes, performance models where wheel condition reads as care).

Disclose when the damage is light, the car sits at a price point where buyers expect honest wear, or refurb cost does not return in the sale price. Shoot it clearly, mention it plainly in the description, and price the car with it in mind.

Whichever you choose, photograph the car in its selling condition. If the refurb is booked, shoot after it is done — photos of pre-refurb wheels on a car sold with refurbished wheels create the mismatch problem in reverse.
