Gumtree Car Photos: How to Get More Enquiries

Gumtree car photos work hard: nine image slots, small thumbnails, local buyers. How to use every slot to get more enquiries and fewer wasted viewings.

Written by Andre, Team Motuva5 min read

Gumtree gives you up to 9 images per ad (Gumtree help centre). That is fewer than most car platforms, which makes the question simple: which nine photos, and in what order?

The short answer: a clean front three-quarter shot first — it has to work at thumbnail size in a classifieds grid — then sides, rear, interior, odometer, and honest close-ups of anything a buyer would notice in person. Nine slots is exactly enough to show the car properly if none of them is wasted.

How Gumtree buyers actually browse

Gumtree is a classifieds site, and used-car browsing on it is local and price-led. Buyers typically set a distance and a budget, then scan a grid of listings where each ad gets a small thumbnail, a title, and a price.

Two things follow from that.

The thumbnail is doing most of the work. At classifieds-grid size, fine detail vanishes. A photo that looks fine full-screen can read as a dark smudge in the grid. Your first photo needs the whole car, good light, and a background that does not swallow it.

The buyer is probably nearby. Gumtree enquiries skew local, which means enquiries convert to viewings quickly — and a viewing that ends with "it looked better in the photos" wastes an evening for both of you. Honest photos filter your enquiries down to people who will actually buy.

The first photo: win the grid

Gumtree's grid shows your lead image small, beside listings from private sellers and dealers alike. What survives shrinking:

  • Whole car in frame, with breathing room on all sides
  • Front three-quarter angle — the most information one image can carry
  • Light on the car, not behind it — backlit cars disappear at small sizes
  • A background quieter than the car — wall, sky, clean tarmac
  • Straight wheels and a level frame — small things that read as care

The full method for getting this shot right is in how to nail the car listing hero shot. On Gumtree, where the thumbnail is smaller than on the big portals, it matters even more.

Which nine photos

Gumtree's own car-selling guide suggests nine photos is a good amount and recommends covering the exterior and interior, under the bonnet, alloy close-ups, any visual defects, the milometer, and the service history file — shot from normal standing height (Gumtree car photo guide).

A practical order for the nine slots:

  1. Front three-quarter — the grid shot
  2. Rear three-quarter — the mirror view
  3. Full side profile — body condition in one frame
  4. Dashboard and instruments — ideally with the screen on
  5. Front seats — wear and bolsters visible
  6. Rear seats and boot — one frame can cover both on a hatchback
  7. Odometer — answers the first question every buyer asks
  8. Engine bay — evidence of care
  9. The honest shot — the scuff, the kerbed alloy, the worn seat edge

If the car has no flaws worth a frame, use slot nine for the service history file or a notable feature. But for most used cars, the honest shot is the slot that earns its keep.

Honest photos cut wasted enquiries

This is the part private sellers get wrong and dealers can get right. Hiding the scuffed bumper does not make it go away — it moves the discovery to the viewing, where it costs you the sale or a chunk of the price, plus the half hour you spent on the viewing.

Photographing it does the opposite. The buyer who enquires after seeing the flaw has already accepted it. Your enquiries drop slightly in number and rise sharply in quality. On a local platform where every enquiry tends to become a viewing request, that trade is firmly in your favour.

The same goes for prep. Ten minutes of quick car prep before listing photos — clear the cabin, wipe the dash, straighten the wheels — removes the accidental dishonesty of a messy interior making a decent car look neglected.

Standing out in a private-seller feed

Gumtree's car listings are a mix of trade and private sellers, and the photographic baseline is low: driveway shots, harsh shadows, bins in frame, interiors photographed through an open door.

For a dealer, consistency is the visible difference. Nine photos shot the same way on every car — same angles, same order, clean backgrounds — signals an organised business at a glance, before the buyer reads a word. If your phone photos are letting the cars down, the fundamentals (light, focus, framing, lens hygiene) are covered in how to improve car photo quality.

Where the location lets you down, AI background replacement gives you the clean backdrop the forecourt cannot. Motuva takes your photo of the actual car and rebuilds the scene around it. Worth being clear about what that means: the scene is rendered, the car is not. Your photograph is cut out and composited into the studio, so the car in the output is the car you photographed — nothing about the vehicle is generated. Check each output against the original before publishing anyway; a busy forecourt makes for a harder cut-out, and the ad is yours. On a local platform where the buyer will stand next to the real car within days, the photos and the car need to match.

Gumtree does not publish detailed image-content rules in its public help pages beyond the basics, so check their current guidance if you plan anything unusual — overlays, branding, or composite images.

The routine

  1. Prep the car — ten minutes, inside and out.
  2. Shoot the nine-shot list on your phone, standing height, overcast light if available.
  3. Lead with the front three-quarter.
  4. Include the honest shot.
  5. Fix backgrounds in editing where needed — and check every output against the original.
  6. Reuse the exact same routine on every car.
