What Is a VDP (Vehicle Detail Page)?

A VDP is the individual listing page for a single car — the page a buyer lands on from search or a portal. Here's why it matters and what makes a good one.

A VDP — vehicle detail page — is the individual listing page for a single car. It is the page a buyer lands on when they click a car in search results, on Auto Trader, on your own website, or anywhere else you list stock.

Every car in your inventory has its own VDP. If you have 40 cars on your forecourt, you have 40 VDPs. The quality of those pages — the photos, the description, the price, the call to action — determines whether a buyer picks up the phone or bounces back to search.

What a VDP Contains

A standard VDP includes:

  • Photos — the primary driver of engagement. Most portals and dealer websites show the lead photo as a thumbnail in search, then display all photos on the VDP itself.
  • Price — including any finance representative example if you offer it.
  • Key spec — make, model, year, mileage, fuel type, transmission, colour.
  • Description — a free-text section where you can add detail, provenance, service history, and anything else that supports the sale.
  • Contact options — phone number, enquiry form, WhatsApp, or similar.
  • Finance calculator — on dealer websites and some portals.

The photos section almost always sits above the fold. On mobile — where most car searches now happen — the lead photo is the first and sometimes only thing a buyer sees before they decide whether to scroll or leave.

Why VDP Quality Matters

A buyer looking at your VDP has already shown intent. They searched, they saw the thumbnail, they clicked. You have their attention. What you do with it in the next ten seconds determines whether that engagement converts to a lead.

Photo quality is the highest-leverage element on a VDP. Listings with more photos — and better photos — consistently generate more enquiries, and marketplace guidance generally points dealers towards comprehensive photo sets of 20 or more images. The mechanism is simple: more photos answer more questions and reduce the uncertainty that stops buyers from contacting you.

A buyer who can see the car clearly, from multiple angles, in a clean consistent environment, is more likely to make the call. A buyer who sees four blurry images on a grey forecourt is more likely to look at the next listing.

What Good VDP Photos Look Like

The best VDP photos are:

  • Consistent — same background, same lighting, same angles across your whole stock. Your VDPs look like they belong to one professional operation, not a mix of sunny-day snaps and dark-garage shots.
  • Clean — the car is the subject. The background is neutral or studio-quality. There is nothing distracting in frame.
  • Comprehensive — exterior from multiple angles, interior, dashboard, boot. Buyers who can see everything ask fewer pre-purchase questions and commit faster.
  • High resolution — portals like Auto Trader display photos large. Low-resolution images look unprofessional at full size.

How Motuva Helps

Motuva takes a photo you shoot on a phone or camera and replaces the background with a studio-quality scene using AI. The result is a consistent, professional-looking image suitable for any VDP, on any portal, at any volume.

Every image starts from a real photo of the actual car, taken by you — and the car stays that photo. Its own pixels are cut out and composited into a studio built around them, so the setting looks studio-produced even when the car was shot in a car park, while the vehicle itself is untouched. Check the output against your original before publishing.

The output is sized and formatted for web use. Upload it to Auto Trader, your dealer website, or any portal that accepts standard image uploads.

Free tier: 20 images a month, no card required. Try it on your actual stock before committing to anything.
